MIT OGC at NACUA 2023 Annual Conference

In June 2023, attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) attended the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) 2023 Annual Conference. The following OGC attorneys presented at NACUA:


Matt Fucci presented on a panel alongside FBI Special Agent Paul Zukas and representatives from Stanford and Rice Universities on a new Department of Justice initiative to share intelligence information more openly with universities.  The initiative, called Operation Smoky Transfer, is designed to help universities better protect their intellectual property and prevent potential misappropriation of academic resources.


Jason Baletsa presented on monitoring international enforcement of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL). He discussed the differences between the GDPR and PIPL and presented a case study of a GDPR enforcement action against University College Dublin.  


Lorry Spitzer moderated a panel titled “Federal Tax Update,” covering a wide variety of topics.  Lorry was joined by Jodi Kessler, Director of Tax and Global Operations of MIT’s Office of the Vice President for Finance. The panel covered the following topics:

  1. What’s Happening in Washington? Congress, the IRS, and the Exempt Organization sector
  2. Corporate Alternative Minimum Tax
  3. Energy credits – hot topic!
