June 9, 2025

On June 9, 2025, MIT and 23 other research institutions filed an amicus brief in support of Harvard University’s lawsuit challenging federal actions to eliminate the grant funding that Harvard receives from the U.S. government. Drawing on specific examples from MIT and the other institutions, the brief describes the history of federal research funding since World War II and explains how that academic-government partnership has led to innovations that have made America a global leader. The brief also describes how the current challenges to that model jeopardize American innovation and economic growth.
