MIT Joins in Amicus Brief

In late February, MIT joined an amicus brief with several other IVY Plus institutions.

On February 29, 2016 MIT joined an amicus brief with Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, UPenn, Princeton, Stanford and Yale supporting Columbia University in asking the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) not to reverse or modify the NLRB 2004 decision in Brown University 342 NLRB 483 (Brown). In the Brown decision, the NLRB decided that graduate student teaching assistants and research assistants are not employees under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).  In this amicus brief, the Ivy Plus institutions present legal and policy arguments why the relationship between a college or university and its graduate student teaching assistants and research assistants is an academic relationship, not an economic or employment relationship. You can find the brief here.
